Jeffrey Linn Halbert

July 15, 1950 — December 7, 2015

Jeffrey Linn Halbert was born on July 15, 1950 in Bonne Terre, Missouri and departed this life on December 7, 2015 having reached the age of sixty-five years, four months and twenty-two days. He grew up in DeSoto, Missouri with his his parents Perry and Edith, his sister Elaine and brother Kent. Jeff was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from DeSoto High School in 1968 ranking 7th of 160. He participated in Band and the National Honor Society. He received an associate degree from Jefferson College in 1970 and then attended the University of Missouri at Rolla where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 1972. Subsequently he worked as a computer systems analyst for Brown Shoe Company in Clayton, Missouri. He retired from Brown Shoe in 2000. He lived in Arnold, Missouri for over 20 years and spent much of his time at the Halbert family farm near Belgrade Missouri, which he lovingly took care of until his death. His interests included going on an annual fishing trip to Canada with friends from his college days, working on the cars and trucks he had purchased over the years and on farm equipment. He was preceded in death by his father, his grand-parents, an aunt and a great niece. Those left to mourn his passing include his mother, sister Elaine and her husband Bill, brother Kent Halbert, 2 aunts and an uncle, niece Colleen McCoy and her husband Matt, niece Tracy Penfield and her husband Mike, 2 great nieces, 4 great nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Jeff enjoyed maintaining his yard in Arnold and the hard work of keeping up the farm property where his father grew up and he and Elaine and Kent spent many wonderful childhood weekends with their grandparents. He always had a special connection with the place and wanted to stay there as much as possible. He made the statement as a young boy, that he wanted to someday live there and “be a hermit.” He was hardly that, but did spend more than half his time there after he retired. He enjoyed growing vegetables, building a barn and sometimes just walking the fields.
Jeff would have been considered shy, but could carry on a good conversation if in the mood. He was concerned about his family and attended reunions and family get togethers for special occasions. He developed some cooking skills as he said, “because he had to” and among his specialties were chili, potato salad, cakes and brownies with walnuts from the farm.
He will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
