Opal Verbena Cagle of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri formerly of Stoney Point, Missouri was born at Cherryville, Missouri on Sunday, August 7, 1910 a daughter of the late Anna (Bergner) Jost and Louis Herman Jost. Opal died Friday, April 30, 2004 at the Riverview Manor, Ste. Genevieve, Missouri at the age of Ninety-three Years, Eight Months and Twenty-three Days.
Opal was united in marriage to Garefield Cagle May 24, 1928 in Belleville, Illinois; Gare preceded Opal in death December 31, 1979 and then married Jesse Ide who also preceded her in death.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Beverly A. Donze and husband Jack of St. Genevieve, Missouri; one step son, Ray Dean Cagle and wife Pat of Kimmswick, Missouri; two grandchildren, Michelle McDaniel and husband Troy, Jennifer Thompson and husband Dennis; ten step grandchildren, Randall Cagle and wife JoAnn, Bradley Cagle and wife Sherry, Rita Brinkley and husband Bill, Dennis Cagle, Billy Cagle, Kenneth Cagle and wife Ellen, Bobby Cagle, April Little and husband Michael, Lynn Brooks and husband Dennis and Patty Cagle; Two great grandchildren, Four step great grandchildren, Step daughter-in-law, Lucille Cagle of Desloge, Missouri; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents and husbands, Opal was also preceded in death by One daughter, Bonnie Elisabeth Cagle; one step son, Claude Erven Cagle; one sister, Luella Daily and six brothers, Charles Jost, Daily Jost, Lyn Jost, Luther Jost, Harry Jost and Robert Jost.
Opal had accepted Christ as her savior at the age of Fourteen and was a charter member of the Unity Baptist Church. Opal loved to spend time with her church family and always looked forward to the special events.
Opal and her husband Gare were in business in Washington County for many years as owners of a Grocery Store which also handled feed and hardware. The store became a landmark in the area known as Cagle’s Store. They then purchased the McClard property and became one of Leadwood’s leading business owners operating a wood and coal yard and the East Side Filling Station. In 1949 they changed their farm into what is now known as the Potosi Lake Development. In 1960 they left the area briefly to be caretakers of the Coldwater Game Preserve and Club at Clearwater, Missouri. Opal had the honor of being the first woman to ever sit on the Jury in Washington County. She was an enthusastic supporter of Parent Teacher work in the welfare of children. She was Washington County Chairwomen for many years, during which parent teacher units were organized in many schools. Opal served as president of the Stoney Point School for six years and gave voluntary assistance to the Head Start project. Opal was truly a Benefactor of Children and Education.
Opal always had the welfare of others first in her mind. She would always look for ways to help and better the people, children and the community. No greater a legacy can a woman leave her family than for them to know she had the Love, Admiration and Respect of everyone who came into contact with her.
Memorials may be made to the Riverview Manor, Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, Hospice Care Inc. or to Unity Baptist Mission.
Visitation was held Saturday, May 1, 2004 from 5:00PM to 8:00 PM and Sunday, May 2, 2004 from 12 Noon to 2:30 PM at the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 2, 2004 at 2:30 PM at the Moore Memorial Chapel, Potosi, Missouri with Reverend guy Conway officiating. Musical selections played were “Beyond the Sunset”, “How Great Thou Art” and “the Last Mile of the Way”.
Final Prayers and Burial was at the New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi, Missouri. Honoring the legacy of Opal serving as Pallbearers were Randy Cagle, Brad Cagle, Billy Cagle, Bobby Cagle, Denny Cagle and Bill Brinkley.
Services were entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
