MARY ALICE "NELLIE" COURTWAY
NELLIE COURTWAY OF BLACKWELL, MISSOURI, WAS BORN APRIL 25, 1902, IN RACOLA, MISSOURI, A DAUGHTER OF THE LATE WILLIAM E. AND ALLIE (CAIN) BOYER. NELLIE DEPARTED THIS LIFE AT HER RESIDENCE ON MAY 28, 1999, HAVING REACHED THE AGE OF NINETY-SEVEN YEARS, ONE MONTH AND THREE DAYS.
NELLIE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO JOHN B. COURTWAY ON MAY 15, 1923, IN OLD MINES, MISSOURI, AND TO THIS UNION NINE CHILDREN WERE BORN.
NELLIE IS SURVIVED BY ONE SON, LAWRENCE "RAT" COURTWAY AND WIFE HALLIE OF ARNOLD, FIVE DAUGHTERS, BARBARA DICKERSON AND HUSBAND LOUIS OF CADET, MARY VELMA PORTELL AND HUSBAND ROBERT OF ARNOLD, DOROTHY COLEMAN OF COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO, VIOLA THEBEAU AND HUSBAND RUSSELL OF CADET, CAROL OLAKER AND HUSBAND DON OF CADET, THIRTY-FIVE GRANDCHILDREN, SIXTY-TWO GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, TEN GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, ONE SISTER, LILLIE POLITTE OF CADET, ONE SISTER-IN-LAW, LENA BOYER OF CADET, AND DAUGHTERS-IN-LAW, MAYME COURTAWAY OF BLACKWELL, JUNE COURTWAY OF CADET, BEA COURTWAY OF HERCULANEUM AND BY MANY OTHER RELATIVES AND FRIENDS. IN ADDITION TO HER PARENTS AND SPOUSE SHE WAS ALSO PRECEDED IN DEATH BY THREE SONS, JOSEPH "BUCK", JAMES EDWARD AND HAROLD "TOAD" COURTWAY, FIVE BROTHERS, EARNEST, FLOYD, RAYMOND, FRANCIS AND ROY BOYER, THREE SISTERS, VIRGIE MERSEAL, PEARL BOYER AND LOUISE OSIA, AND BY ONE GRANDDAUGHTER.
NELLIE WAS A DEVOTED AND LONGTIME FAITHFUL MEMBER OF THE ST. JOACHIM CATHOLIC CHURCH. NELLIE'S LIFE OF NINETY-SEVEN YEARS TOOK HER THROUGH MANY VALLEYS AND OVER MANY MOUNTAIN TOPS IN HER DAILY TRAVEL. DURING HER TRAVELS OF LIFE SHE NEVER LOST FAITH IN THE MEANING OF LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP.
NELLIE ENJOYED QUILTING AND CROCHETING, PLAYING BINGO AND CARD GAMES WITH HER MANY FAMILY AND FRIENDS. SHE TOOK GREAT PRIDE IN HER GARDENING TALENTS AND ALWAYS ENJOYED SHARING THE GIFTS OF THAT TALENT. NELLIE HAD A GREAT LOVE FOR HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS EACH OF THEM HELD A VERY DEAR PLACE IN HER HEART.
VISITATION WAS HELD MONDAY, MAY 31, 1999 FROM 1:00 P.M. TO 9:00 P.M. AT THE GUM AND SON FUNERAL HOME, POTOSI.
A FUNERAL MASS WAS HELD TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 1999 AT 10:00 A.M. AT THE ST. JOACHIM CATHOLIC CHURCH WITH FATHER TED PIEPER OFFICIATING. BURIAL WAS IN THE ST. JOACHIM CATHOLIC CHURCH CEMETERY. SERVING AS PALL BEARERS WERE PHILLIP DICKERSON, ALLAN GUENTHER, DAVID COURTWAY, BRUCE PORTELL, RONNIE COURTWAY, ANTHONY COLEMAN, GARY DECKER AND BRADLEY MILLER. ALL SERVICES WERE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF GUM AND SON FUNERAL HOMES, INC., POTOSI, MISSOURI.
