Mona Huitt

Mona Huitt of Cuba, Missouri formerly of Potosi, Missouri was born on Thursday, November 21, 1912 on a farm in Huzzah, Missouri a daughter of the late, Florence (Mallow) Huitt and James O. Huitt. Mona departed this life on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Sullivan, Missouri having reached the age of ninety-eight years, one month and eleven days.

Mona is survived by one stepdaughter, Mary Stubblefield of Cuba, Missouri; three step-grandchildren, Mary L. Uhle, J.C. Stubblefield, Tracy Arsenualt; very good friends, Everett and Susan Huff and Family; also surviving are other relatives and many friends including her teacher friends and church family.

Mona started her education at the Huzzah School at the age of five and soon moved with her family to a farm in Lost Creek Valley and finished the rest of her grade school education at the Pine Forest School. She attended a two-year high school at Berryman and finished her high school education at Steelville High School, where she also started her training as a teacher. She began teaching and attending college in the summer months. She did most of her college credits at University of Missouri and finished at Columbia University with a Bachelors in Education on August 7, 1942. Mona taught in rural schools in Crawford and Washington counties for twenty-four years, with fifteen of those being in her home district, Pine Forrest and when it closed, she came to Potosi to teach third grade for eight years.

Mona loved to ride horses from a very young age and became quite a “cowgirl” by the time she was twelve years old. She earned her first money by helping her father drive herds of cattle; her salary was $1.00 a day. She saved her earnings to help her parents pay for her high school education. Education was so important to Mona as well as helping young people receive a good education.

Visitation was held Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri.

A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the Moore Memorial Chapel, Potosi, Missouri with Brother Wayne Isgriggs officiating.

Final Prayers and Burial took place in the New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi, Missouri.

Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
