Alonzo Ray Jarvis
Alonzo Ray “Shorty” Jarvis of Shirley, Missouri was born Saturday, July 14, 1928 in Potosi, Missouri a son of the late Ella (Skaggs) Jarvis and Virgil J. Jarvis. Shorty departed this life suddenly Thursday, July 29, 2004 at his home at the age of Seventy-six Years and Fifteen Days.
Shorty was united in marriage to Ruth M. Bourisaw April 4, 1945 in Old Mines, Missouri. They were blessed to have two Sons and five Daughters born to the union.
Shorty is survived by his loving and devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Ruth M. Jarvis of Shirley, Missouri; Five daughters, Beverley Vensel and husband Ralph of Las Vegas, Nevada, Theresa Spoo and husband Harry of Pinellas Park, Florida, Sheila Doughty and husband Glen of St. Louis, Missouri, Mary Conley and husband Mike of O’Fallon, Missouri, Lorraine “Lorrie” Drummond and husband Louie of Potosi, Missouri; Two sons, Leroy Jarvis and wife Faye of Mineral Point, Missouri, Michael Jarvis and wife Pam of Shirley, Missouri; Seventeen Grandchildren, Angela, Tina, Amber, Jamie, Cassie, Shannon, Michelle, Timothy, Don, Larry, Sarah, Adreann, Jeffery, Jonie, Mike, Ashley and Jorden; Twenty-four Great Grandchildren, Magdalene, Matthew, Mollie, Allison, Devin, Jonathan, Alexandra, Olivia, Kennedy, Sophia, Trenton, Caleb, Trevor, Makayla, McKenzie, Trisha, Cassie, Danniel, Morgan, Michael, Lauren, Jennifer, Austin and Chloe; One sister-in-law, Ann Jarvis of Potosi, Missouri and by many others special relatives and dear friends. In addition to his parents, Shorty was also preceded in death by One Sister, Bonnie Densmore; Four Brothers, Willie Jarvis, Lindy Jarvis, Ernest Jarvis and Phil Jarvis.
Shorty and his wife Ruth owned and operated the Jarvis Grocery Store, Shirley, Missouri for over Twenty-five years. They enjoyed the store and the many customers and friends that would stop in for a visit. Prior to his retirement Shorty worked in the Construction trades as a carpenter. Shorty loved to spend time working on his farm and raising cattle. Summer and Winter he was ready to cut or haul hay or take the grandchildren for a ride in the truck or on the four wheeler. Shorty took great pride in his garden and would always make sure to plant enough for family, neighbors and friends. Shorty loved to spend time in the outdoors deer and turkey hunting, fishing or just relaxing looking at the many gifts of mother nature. He was a lifetime member of the Potosi Elks Lodge #2218.
Shorty had a great love for his family and his friends, he was always ready to go to a gathering and visit the evening away. He loved to spend time at the creek and have a fish fry or just visit and tell a few stories. Shorty would always stop and take just a minute when he would be leaving to tell a story or a political joke.
Shorty always had a smile, hand shake and a word for everyone. He would always listen when you needed him to or show up to help when you were in need.
Visitation was held Saturday, July 31, 2004 from 1:30 PM to 9:00 PM and Sunday, August 1, 2004 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Moore Funeral Homes, Potosi, Missouri.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 1, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the Moore Memorial Chapel with Father George Galovich officiating.
Final prayers and burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Potosi, Missouri. Serving as Pallbearers were Jorden Drummond, Louie Drummond, Mike Conley, Glen Doughty, Tim Weston, David Edgar, John Momot and Travis Coleman. Following the services the family and friends returned to the St. James Catholic Church Hall where a luncheon was provided by the Church.
Services were entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
