George Edwin Mapes of Potosi was born November 14, 1940 in Potosi a son to the late Alice (Hudson) Mapes and Theodore Mapes. George departed this life Thursday, May 20, 2021 having reached the age of 80 years, 6 months and 6 days.
On September 21, 1960, George was united in marriage to Julie (Bohan) Mapes. They shared many adventures together and were blessed with sixty wonderful years.
George is survived by his loving wife, Julie; daughters, Elaine Hawkins and husband Rodney of Potosi, Beverly Gillam of Potosi; three grandchildren, Justin (Alyssa) Gillam, Sierra (Chris) Nettles, Jessica Hawkins (Jordan Veach); five great grandchildren, Cameron Duncan, Connor Duncan, Ayden Nettles, Jax Nettles, Harrison Gillam and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore Mapes, Jr. and sisters, Elizabeth Battreal and Armeda Woodring.
George was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was loved by his community and served with the Potosi Police Department, the City of Potosi, Street Department and the Missouri Dept. of Corrections before retiring. He loved music and played in a Gospel band. He loved traveling on his motorcycle and seeing new places in Canada and Mexico. In addition to traveling, he loved going to yard sales, entering car shows, working on old cars and stock car racing. He was a genuine friend and will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
