Erma Elizabeth Merrill, of Irondale, departed this life on Monday, April 2, 2012 at her home surrounded by the love and care of her family. Erma was born on Monday, February 10, 1936, a daughter of the late Lorene (Strange) Harding-Parker and William Harding. Erma was Seventy-six years, one month and twenty-three days of age.
Erma was united in marriage to Neil David Merrill on December 19, 1953 at Hernando, Mississippi. They were blessed to have five children and over fifty-eight years together.
She is survived by her husband, Neil Merrill of Irondale; Two Daughters, Neila Crane and husband Bob of Irondale, Carolyn Simily and husband Fred of Terre DuLac; Three Sons, Larry Merrill and wife Lori of Fredericktown, Dennis Merrill and wife Sue of Park Hills and Mark Merrill and wife Lorrie of Irondale. Ten Grand Children, Lindsey, Dustin, Matt, David, Daniel, Jared, Jill, Mark Jr., Andy and Neil; Ten Great-Grand Children, Caden, Drew, Daxton, Maylee, Makenzie, Morgan, Wyatt, Devin, Michael and Mason; Brother-in-law, Curtis Rhodes of Irondale, Special Lady, Ruth Ann Yount of Belgrade, many Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and dear and special friends. In addition to her parents, Erma was also preceded in death by her sister, Nina Rhodes and brothers, William Harding and David Harding.
Erma retired after thirty-four years of service with the Washington County Health Department as administrator. Erma had a great love for the people of Washington County and strived to make the services of the Health Department the best. She was very active finding and implementing new programs and was very proud of the many services that were started during her time with the department. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed the bowling leagues and tournaments. She loved the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and was a faithful fan. Erma enjoyed spending time gardening and being in the out of doors. She loved to fish and was often referred to as, excellent at the art of fishing, at home or on South Padre Island, Texas. Most of all Erma loved spending time with her grandchildren and attending their sporting and other activities. They had a way to warm her heart and put a sparkle in her eye. Erma was a very strong loving lady, who always had a smile to share, a kind word to speak and an open ear to listen. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Visitation was 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday, April 4, at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi and Thursday, April 5, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Frankclay Church of the Nazarene.
The Funeral Service was at the Frankclay Church of the Nazarene at 11:00 AM, Thursday. Officiating the services was Pastor Tammi Wilson assisted by Pastor Jeff Roever. The Wallen Family provided music.
Burial was in the Big River Cemetery, Irondale, Missouri. Honoring the life and memory of Erma, serving as Pallbearers were Matt Merrill, Dustin Merrill, David Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Jared Crane, Andy Simily, Neil Simily and Mark Merrill, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers were Jill Allen and Lindsey Stigers.
Memorials may be given to the Washington County Christmas for Kids, 104 Hickory Street, Potosi, Missouri 63664, in honor of Erma. This was a Charity that she assisted in starting and was very dear to her.
Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
