Gladys Louise Newkirk of Valles Mines, Missouri was born on Monday, March 12, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri a daughter of the late Edna (Paul) Reed and Floyd Short. Gladys departed this life on Friday, July 6, 2012 at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center at the age of Eighty-four years, three months and twenty-four days.
Gladys was united in marriage to the late Carl Newkirk in St. Louis, Missouri on June 20, 1942.
Gladys is survived by one daughter, Carlene Nipper and husband Bobby of Caledonia, Missouri; one son, James Lee Newkirk and wife Crystal of Valles Mines, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Lisa, Bobby, Cindy, Brian, Carol, Janet, Jimmy, Carla, Jamie, Carl and Starr; twelve great grandchildren; many great great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Walter Thoene of Shrewsberry, Missouri; Frank, a resident at Baisch Nursing Center, Brad Akers and the other members of her church and by many other dear relatives and special friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Gladys was also preceded in death by one infant son, Carl Newkirk, Jr., sister, Elsie Thoene; brother, Melvin “Moe” Short; granddaughter, Arlene Newkirk; great grandson, Shannon Hobbs.
Gladys was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Caledonia, Missouri. She was very dedicated to reading her Bible and witnessing about the Lord our Savior. She enjoyed traveling and watching the birds. During her travels, Gladys took great pride in fulfilling her childhood dream of seeing the mountains and oceans. During her working years, Gladys was a cook on river barges and had worked for the United States Postal Service.
Her greatest accomplishment was her love for her Lord and Savior and she was very dedicated to living a very full and happy life.
Visitation was held Sunday, July 8, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri.
Funeral Services were held Sunday, July 8, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Moore Memorial Chapel with Eld. Leonard Compton officiating.
Final Prayers and Burial was at the Palmer Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers were Carl Newkirk, Jimmy Newkirk, Jr., Robbie Benton, bill Crow, Dave McCain, Jordan Grigery and Bobby Baker.
Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
