Len B. Owen
Len B. Owen of Potosi, Missouri was born on Friday, January 10, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri a son of the late, Mary Lucille (Markland) Owen and Lenna Bryan Owen. Len departed this life on Monday, February 25, 2008 at his residence having reached the age of seventy-eight years, one month and fifteen days.
Len was united in marriage to Sally Detjen on November 10, 1951 in Webster Groves, Missouri and this union was blessed with six children.
Len is survived by his loving wife, Sally Owen of Potosi, Missouri; four daughters, Linda Fischer of St. Louis, Missouri, Kathleen Emberton and husband, Dennis of Arnold, Missouri, Wendy Schiller and husband, David of Imperial, Missouri, Kimberly Meder of Imperial, Missouri; two sons, Jeffrey Owen and wife, Sherry of Salem, Missouri, James Owen and wife, Kym of Houston, Texas; one sister, Mary Sue Pensel and husband, Jerry of St. Louis, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Dawn, Maureen, Mario, Deanna, David, Daniel, Cory, Kyle and Jesse; four great grandchildren, Danielle, Jacob, Zachary and Vanessa; nephew, Bill Fisher, also surviving are other relatives and dear and special friends. In addition to his parents, Len was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Thompson.
Len played shortstop for the New York Giants Minor Leagues for one year until the United States Army drafted him. He served during the Korean Conflict from June 19, 1951 to June 5, 1953 and received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal and was a recipient of the Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
Len was a past commander of the American Legion Post, the Scottish Rite and the Potosi Masonic Lodge # 143 AF & AM. He was a supporter of the NRA and enjoyed competitive shooting. Len also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, camping, fishing, cutting wood, playing with his dogs. He enjoyed traveling and taking jeep rides. Len loved to make people smile and was always joking around.
Visitation was held Wednesday, February 27, 2008 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Thursday, February 28, 2008 from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri. A Masonic Memorial was held at 7:00 PM Wednesday, February 27, 2008.
A Funeral Service was held Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri with Reverend Jerry Compton officiating. Serving as pallbearers were: Mario Cortez, Jesse Walker, David Schiller, Cory Emberton, Danny Schiller and Kyle Emberton.
Final Prayers and Burial took place in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri where Len received full military honors consisting of a firing party, taps, flag folding and presentation.
Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
