Gerald Pond of Potosi, Missouri was born on Friday, March 12, 1937 a son of the late, Mary Heath (Lie) Pond and Harry Donald Pond. Gerald departed this life on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the NHC Healthcare of Desloge, Missouri having reached the age of seventy-four years, eleven months and fourteen days.
Gerald was united in marriage to Peggy June Kuenzle on August 2, 1965 in Fairhope, Alabama.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Peggy Pond of Potosi, Missouri; three daughters, Laura Dillard and husband, Ross of St. Louis, Missouri, Anna Falkner and husband, Barry of Montevallo, Alabama, Elizabeth Williams and special friend, Rick of Potosi, Missouri; one half brother, Father Garth Hallett of St. Louis, Missouri; four grandchildren, Dakoda, Reno, Rhiannon, Ariana; mother-in-law, Merle Kuenzle of Greenville, Missouri; also surviving are other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by one half brother, Arne Hallett.
Gerald was born in Mobile, Alabama then lived in Santa Barbara for nine years, and later moved to Fairhope, Alabama on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. Gerald attended Magill High School in Mobile, Alabama. In 1954 at seventeen Gerald enlisted into the United States Navy and was a hospital corpsman and was discharged after four years. He joined the United States Coast Guard in 1962 and worked as an electronics technician.
Gerald met Peggy Kuenzle of Lesterville, Missouri in 1962, then were married on August 2, 1965 in Fairhope, Alabama. They spent two years in Keflavik, Iceland on the NATO Base where two elder daughters were born. Then he was stationed back at Mobile and became a Warrant Officer and spent a year aboard the USCGC Sebago, out of Pensacola, Florida. He was then stationed at the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama until his Honorable Disability Discharge in 1972. He worked at several different jobs through the years and wrote a column for the “Independent Newspaper” for many years.
Gerald move to Potosi, Missouri in 2006 to be near his brother in St. Louis and his wife’s family. Gerald was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Military Officers Association of America and the American Legion Post # 265, Potosi, Missouri. He loved to read, write, work with computers and programming. He was a parishioner of St. James Catholic Church, Potosi, Missouri.
Visitation was held Tuesday, February 28, 2012 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Wednesday, February 29, 2012 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Moore Funeral Home, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the St. James Catholic Church with celebrant and homilist Father Garth Hallett and con-celebrant Reverend Joe Welschmeyer officiating.
Final Prayers and Burial took place in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri where Gerald received full military honors consisting of a firing party, taps, folding and presentation of the American Flag.
Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
