Evelyn Berniece Portell of Potosi, Missouri was born on Friday, May 9, 1930 in Salem, Missouri to the late, Golda (Cox) Warren and Peter Warren. Evelyn departed this life on Saturday, February 19, 2011 and was baptized into the hope of Christ’s resurrection and was anointed with the Sacrament of the Sick before her death at the Potosi Manor Nursing Home, Potosi, Missouri having reached the age of eighty years, nine months and ten days.
Evelyn was united in marriage to Leon David Portell on May 23, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Evelyn is survived by four daughters, Christine Tourville of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Nancy Barton of Old Mines, Missouri, Evelyn Momot and husband, Terry of Potosi, Missouri, Michelle Jones of Potosi, Missouri; two sons, John Portell and wife, Jackie of Potosi, Missouri, Leon Portell, Jr. of Potosi, Missouri; one brother, Dallas Warren of Old Mines, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Portell, one daughter, Ruth Weber, one brother, Danny Warren, four sisters, Faye Tallent, Maude McWhorters, Betty Stocks, Patsy Woodward, one grandchild, Casy Weber.
Evelyn was the oldest of seven children. She was raised in Shannon County and loved spending time with her grandparents near the Current River. In her teenage years her family moved to St. Louis. There she met and married her husband, of nearly 40 years, Leon. Leon and Evelyn were blessed with seven children; most of their lives were spent in Old Mines.
Evelyn had attended the St. Joachim Catholic Church, Old Mines, and the St. James Catholic Church, Potosi. Evelyn loved music and dancing. Evelyn enjoyed sewing, gardening and hunting with her boys. Her family also looked forward to having fried chicken for Sunday dinner. Her adventurous spirit and sense of humor will be missed by all.
Visitation was held Tuesday, February 22, 2011 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Wednesday, February 23, 2011 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri.
A Funeral Service was held Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Moore Memorial Chapel with Father Ted Pieper officiating. Honoring Evelyn by serving as pallbearers were: John Portell, Sr., Leon Portell, Jr., John Portell, Jr., Josh Portell, Nick Jones and Steve Jones.
Memorials may be directed to the family in Evelyn’s loving memory.
Final Prayers and Burial took place in the St. Joachim Catholic Cemetery, Old Mines, Missouri.
Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
