James “Monk” Portell of Cadet, Missouri was born on Sunday, June 24, 1934 in Cadet, Missouri a son of the late, Lucille Cecelia (Bone) Portell and Stephen Anthony Portell. James departed this life on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at his residence having reached the age of seventy-nine years, two months and three days.
James was united in marriage to Teresa Lawson on February 2, 1956 in Tiff, Missouri and this union was blessed with four children.
James is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Teresa Portell of Cadet, Missouri; two daughters, Debbie Jacobsen of Cadet, Missouri; Donna Tallis and husband, Pat of Cadet, Missouri; two sons, Robert Portell and wife, Christine of Cadet, Missouri; Timothy Portell of Cadet, Missouri; three brothers, Charles Portell and wife, Phyllis of Potosi, Missouri; Francis “Bunny” Portell and wife, Patsy of Potosi, Missouri; Randy Portell and wife, Mary of Leadwood, Missouri; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; also surviving are other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by one sister, Maxine Battreal and two brothers, Donald Portell, Stanley “Specks” Portell.
James was a parishioner of the St. Joachim Catholic Church, Old Mines, Missouri and a member of the Washington County Knights of Columbus. He retired from Chrysler on April 30, 2001. James or “Monk” as he was known by, loved to work in his garden, cut wood and go fishing. He also enjoyed playing slot machines and euchre. “Monk” will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation was held Friday, August 30, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Saturday, August 31, 2013 from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri.
A Funeral Service was held Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Moore Memorial Chapel, Potosi, Missouri with Father Tony Dattilo officiating.
Final Prayers and Burial took place in the Portell, Politte and Lawson Family Cemetery, Cadet, Missouri. Serving and pallbearers were: Scott Portell, Richard Lawson, Kenny Farley, Mark Politte, Bruce Politte, Jeff Politte, Isaiah Portell, Joe Freeland and Ben Bone.
