Alfred Ray of Irondale, Missouri was born on Wednesday, June 8, 1927 in Union City, Pennsylvania a son of the late, Dortha (Edwards) Ray and Daniel Ray. Alfred departed this life on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at his residence having reached the age of eighty years, seven months and twenty-five days.

Alfred was united in marriage to Mary Nichols in Las Vegas, Nevada and this union was blessed with two daughters.

Alfred is survived by two daughters, Mary Udy and husband, Calvin of Rigby, Idaho, Judy Thurman and husband, Luther of Irondale, Missouri; three sisters, Juanita Kelsey of Dallas, Texas, Winoia Whitsett and husband, Larry of Scott, Arkansas, Doris Sloan of Centerville, Pennsylvania; two brothers, Roger Sampson and wife, Charlotte of Fennville, Michigan, Douglas Sampson and wife, Jan of Allegan, Michigan; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Alfred was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Ray on October 23, 2005, two sisters, Margaret Kelsey, Kathleen Hatch and two brothers, Chuck Sampson and Richard Sampson.

Alfred served in the United States Army enlisting on August 22, 1945. While serving in the Army Alfred received the Victory Ribbon and was honorably discharged on December 28, 1946.

Alfred enjoyed spending time in the outdoors camping and enjoying the many gifts of Mother Nature. He loved to spend time with his family, who will miss him dearly.

Visitation was held Tuesday, February 5, 2008 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Wednesday, February 6, 2008 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Moore Funeral Home, Irondale, Missouri.

A Funeral Service was held Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Bruce Torrence officiating. Musical selections were: “In The Garden” by: Tennessee Ernie Ford and “Precious Memories” by: Mel Tillis. Serving as pallbearers were: Luther Thurman III, David Thurman, Allen Thurman, Calvin Udy, Skyler Swenson and Luther Thurman IV.

Final Prayers and Burial took place in the Big River Cemetery, Irondale, Missouri where Alfred received full military honors consisting of a firing party, taps, flag folding and presentation.

Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
