Leona F. Thurmond
Leona F. Thurmond of Potosi, Missouri was born on February 11, 1927 in Old Mines, Missouri a daughter of the late, Alvina (Kincaid) Coleman and Joseph Benjamin Coleman. Leona departed this life on May 31, 2008 at her residence having reached the age of eighty-one years, three months and twenty days.
Leona was united in marriage to Harry E. Thurmond on August 17, 1946 in Old Mines, Missouri.
Leona is survived by four daughters, Judy Thurmond of Farmington, Missouri, Alicia Nash and husband, Gary of Middlebrook, Missouri, Noreen Henson and husband, Randy of Mineral Point, Missouri, Benita “Bunny” Henson and husband, Larry of Potosi, Missouri; two sons, Edward Thurmond of Potosi, Missouri, Steve Thurmond and wife, Marsha of Potosi, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren, Steven, Mike T., Tom, Stacy, Mike E., Randy, John, Carolyn, Dan, Nicole, Ben, Brittany, Harry, Franny; fourteen great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Helen Coleman of Mount Morris, Michigan; special friend, Mary Ann Sanders of Potosi, Missouri; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry Thurmond, one infant son, Allen Patrick Thurmond, three brothers, James Richard Coleman, Joseph Leonard Coleman, John Leroy “Judge” Coleman, one grandson, Matt Thurmond and two great grandchildren, Anastasia Leigh Nash and Alicia Kay Nash.
Leona attended the St. Joachim Catholic Church, Old Mines, Missouri. She loved spending time with all of her family and taking care of several of her grandchildren. Leona was a member of the Happy Day Club. She enjoyed playing bingo, scrabble, cross word puzzles and watching game shows, especially Wheel of Fortune. She loved Mother Nature, taking walks, watching birds and working in her garden. She also enjoyed working as an election judge and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post # 6996 Potosi, Missouri since 1967 and served as treasurer and guard for several years. Leona was a wonderful caring woman who will always be remembered for the love she shared and the laughter she created.
Visitation was held Monday, June 2, 2008 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a VFW Auxiliary Memorial Service at 7:00 PM and Vigil Prayer Service at 7:30 PM and visitation also Tuesday, June 3, 2008 from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the St. Joachim Catholic Church, Old Mines, Missouri with Father Robert Liss officiating. Honoring Leona by serving as pallbearers were: Steve Nash, Tom Henson, Mike Thurmond, Mike Essmyer, Randy Henson, John Nash, Harry Thurmond, Dan Brown and Andrew Thurmond.
Final Prayers and Burial took place in the St. Joachim Catholic Cemetery, Old Mines, Missouri.
Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
