Joyce Marie Weiss
Joyce Weiss, a local hairdresser for over seven decades, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at her home in Potosi, Missouri. She was surrounded by her family, as her life of nearly ninety years came to a close.
Mrs. Weiss was born Joyce Marie Studdard, on November 29, 1918, in Bonne Terre Hospital to Melissa and Frank Studdard of Leadwood, Missouri. Her father Frank, a World War I Infantry soldier, first saw his daughter in 1920 at the close of his tour of duty in France.
In 1937, Joyce was married to the late Wilbur Ross Downey, and they had a daughter, Susan Downey Huff. In 1947, Joyce married Alfred J. Weiss and they celebrated fifty-three years of marriage.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband, Alfred J. Weiss; one sister, Helen Irene (Rene) Evans; and Margaret O’Hanlon, long-time business partner and devoted friend.
Serving clients for many years in her beauty shop on West Breton Street, Mrs. Weiss was committed to her career, family and community. She was a member of the Potosi Southern Baptist Church for over fifty years, enjoyed gardening, fishing and following political and business news.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Everett Huff of Potosi; five grandchildren, Nancy (Randy) McMahan of Potosi, Missouri; Alan (Teresa) Huff of Tucson, Arizona; John (Donna Phelps) Huff of Leawood, Kansas; Julie Huff of Potosi, Missouri; and Amy Huff of Potosi, Missouri; five great-grandchildren, Jacob (Tommi) McMahan of Potosi, Missouri; Abbey McMahan of Potosi; Margaret (Maggie) Huff of Tucson, Arizona; Mack Huff of Tucson, Arizona and Ann Huff of Leawood, Kansas along with loving caregivers, extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Care, Inc., P. O. Box 100, Park Hills, Missouri 63601.
Visitation was held Monday evening, September 8, 2008, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Moore Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 11am at the Potosi Southern Baptist Church, Highway 8, Potosi, Missouri. Visitation also was also held at the Church from 9:00 am until 11am, prior to the Tuesday service.
Honoring Joyce by serving as pallbearers were: Abbey McMahan, Ann Huff, Jacob McMahan, Jakob McAnally, Jerry Evans, Mack Huff, Mary Evans, Michael Evans and Tommi McMahan.
Final Prayers and Burial planned to take place in the Caledonia Methodist Cemetery, South Highway 21, Caledonia, Missouri.
Services were Entrusted to the Care and Direction of the Moore Funeral Homes, 105 Clark Street, Potosi, Missouri.
